REFLECT

At last week’s general audience, the Pope said something we have struggled to articulate.

The Pope continued his catechesis series on “The Spirit and the Bride,” focusing on the Holy Spirit’s role in guiding the faithful toward Jesus. He emphasized the Sacrament of Confirmation as a crucial moment for receiving the Holy Spirit, likening it to Pentecost, which strengthens Christians for their role in the Church.

He expressed concern that Confirmation is often seen as a “farewell sacrament” by young people, who may then leave the Church until marriage. Instead, he urged that Confirmation should be viewed as a milestone of active participation in Church life. He encouraged laypeople who have had personal spiritual experiences to help prepare others for Confirmation and called on all believers to rekindle their faith and commitment, using their charisms and talents.
