REFLECT

You know I have sock issues. I do not like it when I put them on and realize later there is a hole (I should turn the light on when I dress, I suppose). This happens because I rarely throw away socks. The ones I have had since the 90s are starting to show their wear.

But now I have another issue.

Lately, I have been buying socks only to have them disappear soon after unwrapping.

The other night, my 15 year old was preparing for an orchestra performance. He is putting on his tux and I ask if he has any dark socks.

“No,” he says, “But I know a guy.”

Excusez-moi?

It turns out the children like the socks I buy. Like the Chips-Ahoy I try to hide.

To get back at them, I learned all the words to “Rolling In The Deep” by Adele and sang it. All. Day. Long.

I tell you this because, like socks and food and wisdom, parents are supposed to share things – beginning with their love of God. Eventually, if we do it well, the children will help themselves to the rituals and practices we have laid before them. They will appropriate the faith which we have offered freely. They will fall in love with Jesus like we have and they will adopt that relationship as their own.

But many of you are already among those who are missing socks, so I suppose you already know how this works.

Have a good week.
